Medico-Legal Experience

Dr Shumontha Dev is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine who has acted as an expert witness for over nine years. He completed Bond Solon Expert Witness training in 2009, which included ‘Excellence in report writing’, ‘Courtroom skills’, ‘Civil Law and Procedure’ and ‘Cross-examination’. He also attended the Bond Solon Expert Witness Conference in 2023, further demonstrating his extensive knowledge and commitment to his medicolegal practice.

Dr Dev accepts instructions from both claimants and defendants in personal injury cases, and has opined on cases relating to burns, lacerations, fractures and dislocations, concussion, and polytrauma. He has particular specialist knowledge in advanced life support, resuscitation, and trauma care, and has completed many reports on these topics.

He regularly writes reports for the police service and the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) for patients who have attended the Emergency Department. He also writes medical reports for the Coroner’s service and has attended as a witness at the Coroner’s Courts.

Dr Dev is available to provide oral evidence in court when required.

Clinical Experience

Dr Dev is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Over the past 14 years, he has been involved in medical education, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and now as the Deputy Director.

He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Medical School, King’s College in London and is an Educational Supervisor for year 4 & 5 medical students, supervising year 4 QIP projects. He regularly teaches medical students who have placements in the Emergency Department at St Thomas’ Hospital.

He also supervises elective medical students regularly and provides educational supervision to trainees of all grades. He is involved with faculty development, delivering the supervision courses for educational and clinical supervisors, and developing the faculty to deliver simulation training.

He developed and ran the interview skills for junior doctors and ran the ‘Introduction to coaching conversations’ course at Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospitals. He has also written a number of book chapters on topics in Emergency Medicine.

Dr Dev is a course Medical Director and Instructor for Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Advanced Life Support (ALS), and European Paediatric Advanced Life Support (EPALS) courses. He is also an instructor for Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS). He is accredited with a Masters in Medical Education (MMedEd) from the University of Warwick. Additionally, Dr Dev is a qualified coach accredited by the European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC).
