Clinical Experience

Mr Ameen is a senior Consultant Neurosurgeon has international and UK based clinical experience, specialising in the diagnosis, surgical treatment and rehabilitation of cranial and spinal neurosurgical conditions. His career spans multiple senior appointments in the UK, Middle East and Iraq, where he has led neurosurgical units and managed complex caseloads in both elective and emergency settings.

He began his neurosurgical career at Central Middlesex Hospital, London (1977–1980) as a Resident Registrar, receiving broad based training in acute and elective neurosurgery under the mentorship of Mr R.D. Illingworth and Mr M. Rice-Edwards. From 1980 to 1992, he co-founded and led a 20 bed neurosurgical unit at Basrah Teaching Hospital and Medical School, providing neurosurgical care to a population of over four million during the Iraq-Iran war, where he gained extensive experience in neurotrauma, including penetrating head and spinal injuries.

Between 1992 and 1994, he served as Consultant Neurosurgeon and Associate Professor at Jordan University Hospital in Amman, a 24-bed dedicated neurosurgical unit. He was also an examiner for the Jordanian Board of Neurosurgery.

From 1998 to 2006, Mr Ameen held a substantive post at the Royal Free Hospital, London first as a Locum Consultant Neurosurgeon and then as a Staff Grade and Associate Specialist. He operated independently alongside three consultants, managing his own outpatient clinics and theatre lists. His audited performance matched consultant level outcomes in terms of morbidity and mortality.

From 2006 to 2009, he worked as a Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon at Hamad General Hospital in Doha, Qatar a modern, fully equipped neurosurgical centre. There he led three theatre sessions and two outpatient clinics per week and participated in multidisciplinary neuroradiology and neuropathology meetings. The hospital served the national population, with a high volume of spinal injuries and trauma-related cases, due to rapid urban development.

From 2009 to 2014, Mr Ameen was appointed as a Consultant Neurosurgeon in Birmingham, initially with a general neurosurgical remit before specialising in spinal surgery. He performed three operative sessions per week, managed spinal inpatient care and participated in the on-call rota. He regularly attended spinal multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings and kept up to date through continuous professional development, attending eight advanced spinal surgery workshops focusing on instrumented fusion and degenerative spine conditions.

His experience also included rehabilitation of complex spinal disorders, drawing on his earlier work at Sketchley Hall Rehabilitation Centre, Leicestershire.

His broad clinical experience across war zones, academic hospitals and leading NHS and international institutions gives him unique insight into complex neurosurgical conditions and their management, making him a highly credible expert for both clinical and legal assessments.
