Medico-Legal Experience

Dr Woodall is a General Practitioner and Expert Witness. He has completed Bond Solon expert report writing training and is instructed by Claimants and Defendants in clinical negligence and personal injury cases.

Dr Woodall is a leading case investigator and a GP Practice Inspector for Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, he undertakes GP Inspections to ensure compliance with current good medical practice in primary care. He is also one of their Senior Case investigators for all deaths in custody (prisons or police custody suites) in Wales. He has carried out over 50 inspections of practices and case investigator of any deaths in custody in Wales prisons, producing high quality reports.

Dr Woodall is happy to opine on causation, liability, condition and prognosis and breach of duty.

Dr Woodall has extensive experience in cases associated with:

  • Delayed diagnosis of conditions, such as:
    – Cancer
    – Heart disease
    – Diabetes
    – Serious acute conditions e.g infections
    o Sepsis
    o Appendicitis
    o Diverticulitis
    o Ischaemic limbs
    o Stroke
    o Heart attack (acute coronary syndrome)
    o Subarachnoid haemorrhage
    o Suicide
    o Ectopic pregnancy
  • Inadequate management of conditions such as:
    – Long term conditions (e.g diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease, including inadequate monitoring or review)
    Repeat medication and medicines related
    – Research in this field (e.g medication monitoring or inadequate counselling regarding medication side effects)
  • Conditions that raise the risk of harm, such as:
    – Atrial fibrillation (AF) increasing risk of stroke
    – Diabetes
    – Hypertension (increasing the risk of heart and stroke)
    – Polypharmacy – taking too many medicines in frail and elderly that result in falls, injury, confusion and hospital admission
  • Operational issues in practices reception
    – Signposting
    – Review or action of investigation results
    – Management of correspondence
  • Inadequate management of mental health conditions in primary and secondary care (Approved by Home Office as a Section 12 (2) Doctor with specialist expertise in psychiatry for mental health act assessments)

Dr Woodall’s availability is 1 week and has a report turnaround time of  2 – 3 weeks.

Clinical Experience

Dr Woodall was a GP partner for nearly 15 years, he is now at Powys Teaching Health Board (PTHB) as a GP principal, leading in integrated care, he provides specialist GP care to patients with serious mental illness/substance misuse who rarely attend primary care, expert opinion on physical health problems for patients in psychiatric and community hospital wards.

He continues to work as an out-of-hours GP, as a locum GP in understaffed practices across the UK and provides expert input on complex cases with multimorbidity and polypharmacy.

Dr Woodall is Honorary (visiting) Professor at the University of South Wales and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer in Primary Care and Mental Health at University of Liverpool, holding nearly £3million in current research grants. He worked for two years as a medical research scientist at the University of California Berkeley, he has also published over 40 papers of international impact that has led to government policy change within the UK.

Dr Woodall has 21academic prizes, awards and fellowships spanning his career throughout science and medicine, with Honours and distinctions in all his medical degrees and membership exams
