Medico-Legal Experience

Dr Ogilvie is a highly experienced Consultant Anaesthetist with over a decade of clinical expertise, specialising in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia, critical care and resuscitation. Currently practising at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, she provides expert care in one of the UK’s leading cardiac centres and holds the pivotal leadership role of Medical Lead for Resuscitation.

Dr Ogilvie acts as a proficient medico-legal expert witness in all anaesthesia-related cases. She is instructed by both Claimants and Defendants to provide impartial, evidence-based reports on breach of duty and causation for clinical negligence and personal injury claims.

Her scope of expertise encompasses anaphylaxis, intubation and airway management, post-operative cognitive dysfunction and general anaesthetic complications.

Dr Ogilvie is highly regarded for her ability to synthesise complex medical information into clear, legally sound reports. She has completed the Cardiff University Bond Solon expert witness training which demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of the Civil Procedure Rules Part 35. While she has received witness summons, she is yet to attend Court.

Dr Oglivie acts in anaesthesia cases associated with:

  • General Anaesthesia:
    – Allegations of negligence in the conduct of general, regional or local anaesthesia
    – Pre-operative assessment and optimisation of patients
    – Intraoperative anaesthetic management and monitoring standards
    – Airway management complications (failed intubation, aspiration, difficult airway)
    – Awareness under anaesthesia
    – Anaesthetic drug errors, adverse drug reactions including anaphylaxis
    – Equipment use and safety (e.g. ventilators, infusion devices)
    – Vascular access and line insertions
    – Intraoperative Cardiovascular management
    – Post-operative care and recovery issues (e.g. failure to recognise deterioration)
    – Post-operative cognitive dysfunction (POCD)
    – Post-operative complications (e.g. nausea and vomiting, delayed recovery)
  • Perioperative Medicine and Patient Safety:
    – Preoperative assessment and optimisation
    – Perioperative risk communication and consent
    – Recognition and management of complications
    – Multidisciplinary team communication and handover issues
  • Emergency Anaesthesia and Resuscitation:
    – Rapid sequence induction and airway management in emergencies
    – Cardiac arrest management and rescue of the deteriorating patient
    – Management of massive transfusion
  • Cardiothoracic Critical Care:
    – Admission, management, and discharge decisions
    – Ventilation management and sedation practices
    – Sepsis management and organ support
    – End-of-life care, withdrawal of treatment and consent/communication issues
  • Medico-legal and Professional Issues:
    – Standards of documentation and consent
    – Duty of candour and communication with patients and families
    – Fitness to practise and professional conduct in anaesthesia practice
    – Review of clinical governance and guideline adherence

Clinical Experience

Dr Ogilvie is a distinguished Consultant in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Critical Care at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, a role that caps over two decades of profound clinical, academic, and leadership contributions to medicine.

Dr Ogilvie earned her MBBS and a BSc in Pharmacology from University College London before achieving Fellowship with the Royal College of Anaesthetists. Her commitment to excellence is further demonstrated by her accreditation in transoesophageal echocardiography and the completion of The Kings Fund’s Aspiring Medical Leaders Programme.

In her current role, she provides expert care within one of the UK’s leading cardiac centres and holds pivotal leadership positions, including Medical Lead for Resuscitation at Barts Health NHS Trust and service on the Peri-Operative Medicine Workforce Committee at the Bart’s Heart Centre.

A dedicated educator, Dr Ogilvie shapes the next generation of medical professionals. She is an esteemed Educational Supervisor and previously served as a College Tutor for the Royal College of Anaesthetists. Her innovative approach to teaching is highlighted by her leadership in simulationbased training initiatives and award-winning presentations at national and international conferences.

Dr Ogilvie’s research footprint is significant, with publications in top-tier journals such as Anaesthesia and the British Journal of Anaesthesia. Her work focuses on critical areas including patient blood management, cardiac surgery outcomes and echocardiography education.
