Medico-Legal Experience

Dr Karen Barton is a Clinical Psychologist who has been an Expert Witness since 2015. She holds the Cardiff University Bond Solon Civil Expert Witness certificate and is instructed by Claimants and Defendants in personal injury, clinical negligence and immigration cases.

Dr Barton’s main areas of expertise include:

Personal injury relating to:

  • Psychological adjustment and psychiatric injury related to traumatic events (i.e. RTA, civil accidents, occupational accidents, etc.).
  • Civil assessment of injury in victims of crime and childhood abuse.
  • Complex PTSD, including victims of crime and historical abuse and how this affects their current day-to-day life.

Clinical negligence relating to:

  • Surgery and psychological surgery trauma (i.e. the impact and psychological consequences of medical intervention or unexpected turn of events either in surgery or immediate aftermath).
  • Birth trauma – the impact of psychologically traumatic labour or birth (i.e. surgery process, medical intervention required in the birthing process and the impact on the mother/father, impact of infant illness on the parents).

Immigration relating to:

  • Assessment of mental health difficulties related to asylum and immigration claims (including victims of torture and abuse in the country of origin)
  • Assessment including the use of interpreters

Dr Barton’s availability is 1-2 weeks and has a report turnaround time of 4-6 weeks.

Clinical Experience

Dr Barton has 20 years of experience working in the NHS, charity and private sectors, and specialises in the assessment of single event and complex (developmental) trauma. In addition to Expert Witness work, she runs a successful private practice specialising in the assessment and treatment of psychological trauma in adults.

She is an Associate Clinical Psychologist with St Basil’s charity, assisting the delivery of their psychologically informed trauma training and practice programme. She is also a guest lecturer at Birmingham University (Clinical Psychology Department).

Whilst in the NHS, she was Clinical Lead for a psychological and psychosocial interventions service with responsibility for implementation of clinical policy and the governance of psychological therapies.

She continues in her role as Clinical Supervisor.
