Dr Shehrzad Yameen Qureshi is a Consultant Psychiatrist specialising in the treatment of alcohol and drug problems. He has over 8 years’ medicolegal experience. 

He has completed training from Bond Solon as well as the Royal College of Psychiatrists, and conducts roughly 150 medicolegal assessments annually from both Claimants and Defendants.

Dr Qureshi is instructed on personal injury, clinical negligence, and criminal cases for Claimants and Defendants in cases associated with:

Clinical Experience

Dr Qureshi is a Consultant Psychiatrist who is dually accredited in general adult psychiatry and addiction psychiatry. His clinical work involves the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of a full range of psychiatric conditions including depression, anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).

He is approved under Section 22 of the Mental Health Care and Treatment (Scotland) (2003) Act as having special experience in the diagnosis and treatment of Mental Disorders.

Dr Qureshi specialises in the treatment of alcohol and drug problems. He has a particular interest in cases where mental health problems have led to addiction issues.

He has worked in an advisory capacity to a number of national organisations, including the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges of Scotland and the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Dr Qureshi attained his medical degree from the University of London. He commenced his basic psychiatric training in North London before completing his higher specialist training in the west of Scotland. He holds a master’s degree in alcohol and drug studies and has been a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists since 2005.

Dr Qureshi’s research interests include genetic factors which contribute to the development of alcohol problems and the use of mindfulness as a means of preventing relapse in addiction problems.

He is on the General Medical Council (GMC) register as a specialist in both general psychiatry and substance misuse.

Publications

Feasibility study into the use of Mindfulness Based Relapse Prevention in an NHS Substance Misuse Service (2009)

This pilot study aimed to determine whether mindfulness could be a useful adjunct in maintaining remission following alcohol detoxification.

UK Collaboration on the Genetics of Alcohol Study (2009)

This multi-centre study aimed to test the hypothesis that mutations at genetic loci lead to increased susceptibility to alcoholism. Fine mapping of these genetic changes led to increased ability to determine the degree of social and psychological influence upon alcoholism.

Systematic literature review comparing heroin assisted treatment to methadone maintenance

This was the subject of my MSc thesis exploring the evidence and controversies regarding diamorphine as a substitute treatment in opiate dependence.
