Medico-Legal Experience

Mr Max Almond is a Consultant Surgeon and an Expert Witness. He is instructed by Claimants and Defendants in personal injury and clinical negligence cases. He has Bond Solon training and has experience in root cause analysis investigation and police witness statements.

Mr Almond has extensive experience in cases associated with:

Personal injury relating to:

  • RTA or EL/PL cases involving trauma to the trunk region (e.g. abdominal trauma, thoracic trauma and rib fractures)
  • Injuries resulting in a haematoma (e.g. abdominal bleeding or buttock injury)
  • Criminal injuries (stabbings, gunshot wounds)

Clinical negligence relating to:

  • Emergency or elective general surgical negligence (including intestinal obstruction, adhesions, peritonitis, appendicitis, acute pancreatitis, abdominal pain, hernias, lipomas, laparoscopic surgery)
  • Complications related to gallbladder surgery
  • Mismanagement of hepatobiliary disease (cholecystectomy, obstructive jaundice, ERCP complications, bile leak, bile duct injury, cholangitis)
  • Mismanagement of upper gastrointestinal pathology (hiatus hernias, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, caustic injury, splenectomy)
  • Post-operative complications including bile leak, anastomotic leak
  • Mismanagement of soft tissue sarcoma including retroperitoneal sarcoma, breast angiosarcoma, desmoid fibromatosis, schwannoma and ganglioneuroma
  • Cases involving mismanagement of abdominal tumours including gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST) and neuroendocrine tumours
  • Mismanagement of surgical endocrine pathology (adrenalectomy, Cushing’s syndrome, Conn’s syndrome, adrenal cancer)
  • All cases involving upper GI endoscopy including ERCP

Mr Almond’s availability is 2-4 weeks and has a report turnaround time of 4-6 weeks.

Clinical Experience

Mr Almond is the Lead for Governance in Emergency General Surgery across the largest NHS Teaching Trust in the UK and has written over 70 research articles, including publications in Nature and the British Journal of Surgery. His specialist areas include abdominal trauma surgery, surgical oncology (soft tissue sarcoma, gastrointestinal stromal tumours, adrenal tumours and neuroendocrine tumours, emergency general surgery (appendicitis, bowel obstruction, peritonitis, jaundice), benign hepatobiliary surgery (laparoscopic cholecystectomy, ERCP), upper gastrointestinal surgery (hiatus hernia repairs, anti-reflux surgery, splenectomy), elective general surgery (open and laparoscopic hernia repairs, lipoma excision), diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. Mr Almond is also highly skilled at open, laparoscopic (keyhole) and endoscopic procedures.
