Medico-Legal Experience

Mr Bhagat is a Consultant Spinal Surgeon with extensive experience in the assessment and management of complex spinal disorders. He has 11 years’ medico-legal experience, providing independent evidence-based expert opinions in a wide range of spinal cases. He is an Expert Witness with Bond Solon training and is instructed by Claimants and Defendants on cases of personal injury and clinical negligence.

He is frequently instructed to prepare expert witness reports addressing issues of diagnosis, surgical decision-making, standard of care, causation, prognosis and future treatment requirements.

Having a strong background in both elective and emergency spinal surgery, Mr Bhagat is skilled in analysing complex medical records and imaging to provide clear, balanced, objective opinions that assist courts, solicitors and insurers. He is experienced in differentiating pre-existing spinal disease from injury-related pathology and in assessing long-term functional impact.

Mr Bhagat undertakes medico-legal work with independence and impartiality, working strictly within his area of expertise and in accordance with accepted medico-legal principles. Annually, Mr Bhagat prepares 10-20 clinical negligence reports, opining on breach of duty, condition and prognosis, liability and causation.

Although he has been a medico-legal expert for a number of years and has received numerous witness summons’ he is yet to attend trial.

Clinical Experience

Mr Bhagat is a Consultant Spinal Surgeon currently affiliated with with Ipswich Spinal Unit at Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust, Nuffield Health Ipswich, Colchester Hospital and Oaks Hospital, Colchester, with extensive experience in the assessment and management of a wide range of spinal conditions. His clinical practice includes both elective and emergency spinal care, encompassing complex diagnostic and surgical decision-making.

He has particular expertise in the management of complex spinal disorders, including Cauda Equina Syndrome, where he regularly undertakes urgent assessment, imaging interpretation and timely surgical intervention. Mr Bhagat also has significant experience in treating patients with connective tissue disorders, including Ehlers–Danlos syndrome, managing associated spinal instability, chronic pain and complex surgical considerations.

His practice encompasses a comprehensive spectrum of spinal conditions, including degenerative disorders, trauma, tumours, infections, deformities, and sports-related injuries.

Mr Bhagat holds specialised expertise in minimally invasive keyhole spinal surgery and degenerative deformity. Notably, he established a specialised paediatric spinal clinic at Ipswich Hospital, contributing to specialised patient care.

He serves as a faculty member for numerous spine surgery and FRCS Orthopaedic teaching courses, reflecting his dedication to advancing the field.
