Medico Legal Experience

Mr Kitchen is a Consultant Paediatric Neurosurgeon and Expert Witness with comprehensive expertise in all aspects of Paediatric Neurosurgery. Mr Kitchen specialises in Neuro-oncology, focusing on brain and spinal tumor diagnosis and treatment in paediatric patients.

He has undertaken Bond Solon training on report writing and is instructed by Claimants and Defendants on clinical negligence, personal injury, serious and catastrophic injuries, desktop/screening reports, and matters relating to the MOD concerning junior soldiers.

He has experience in cases related to:

  • CSF (cerebral spinal fluid) infection

  • Non-accidental injury (shaken baby syndrome)
  • Chiari malformation (congenital condition, brain tissue extends into the spinal canal)

Clinical Experience

Mr Kitchen is an accomplished and dedicated Consultant Paediatric Neurosurgeon. He completed his undergraduate studies at The University of Aberdeen and subsequently pursued his Basic Surgical Training within NHS Grampian, honing his foundational skills in surgery.

His passion for neurosurgery led him to The Institute of Neurological Sciences in Glasgow, where he underwent specialised neurosurgical training. John continued his experience at The Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery and Alder Hay Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, UK.

He completed his Paediatric Neurosurgery fellowship training at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, UK.

A notable aspect of John’s career is his involvement in formal academic research at The University of Manchester, where he contributed to The Brain Injury Research Group’s efforts, focusing on neurosurgical aspects of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) infection. This research experience has further enriched his knowledge and ability to provide evidence-based care for his patients.

John’s main areas of clinical interest are neuro-oncology and epilepsy. He has a specialist interest in epilepsy surgery and is a member of the regionally commissioned epilepsy surgery service (Norcess).

John is dedicated to training junior neurosurgeons in the North West. He is an assigned educational supervisor for trainees rotating through the department of neurosurgery.

John’s clinical practice encompasses various neurosurgical areas, including trauma management, hydrocephalus, neuro-endoscopy, Chiari and syringomyelia treatments, spinal dysraphism interventions, and neurological infection management.
